Exclusive 'Warrior' Blu-Ray Clip: Behind The Fight

This writer's love for "Warrior" knows no bounds. (See exhibits A and B.) I firmly believe that if more people see it, they will jump on the bandwagon and agree that Nick Nolte deserves a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination. Starting today (Dec. 20), "Warrior" is available on DVD/Blu-Ray combo and on Video on Demand and Digital Download. To celebrate the excellent release we bring you this exclusive commentary clip from the Blu-Ray featuring Maxmiliano Hernandez, who played trainer Colt Boyd in the film, and director/co-writer/producer Gavin O'Connor. Do yourselves a favor and see this film! "Tommy was the tougher sell because you want an equal emotional arc for both of them," Hernandez says of the two brother fighters in the film played by Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton. "I think Brendan is a lot easier to get to, you see his family you see where he is. You see his troubles, you see everything. Tommy can be misconstrued as this brooding, angry-at-the-world guy which is the very surfacey way the character could have been written." Hernandez goes on to praise O'Connor and his writing team for drawing out the reveal of Tommy's character's complex arc, that it completely draws in the audience. "It starts clicking, 'Wow this guy was a lot more emotionally damaged, whatever happened happened a lot worse to him than it did to Brendan," he said. "I think the audience starts figuring it out and it's great you get that reaction, it becomes 'I don't know who to root for.'" What do you think of "Warrior?" Tell us in the comments or on Twitter!

Real-Life Rudy Accused of Screwing Investors Out of $11 Million

It’s a sad day for fans of the inspiring sports classic Rudy. Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger, perhaps the most famous collegiate football underdog of all time — on whom the title character in David Anspaugh’s 1993 film was based — has been charged by the SEC for a pump-and-dump scheme that earned him over $10 million in profits for a Rudy-branded sports drink. According to a press release from the SEC (via The Observer): The Securities and Exchange Commission today charged Daniel Ruettiger and 12 other participants in a scheme to deceive investors into buying stock in his sports drink company. Ruettiger is widely known for having inspired the 1993 motion picture “Rudy.” According to the SEC’s complaint filed in federal court in Las Vegas, Ruettiger founded Rudy Nutrition to compete with Gatorade in the sports drink market. Rudy Nutrition produced and sold modest amounts of a sports drink called “Rudy” with the tagline “Dream Big! Never Quit!” However, the company primarily served as a vehicle for a pump-and-dump scheme that occurred in 2008 and generated more than $11 million in illicit profits. Movie Rudy, as played by Sean Astin, would have never approved of this. For an extensive write-up of the Rudy case, see Foster Kamer’s brilliant report, which features Ruettiger as the Financial Criminal of the Day. NFL Extends TV Network Broadcast Deals Through 2022

In addition to the successful movie franchise, the contemporary incarnation of Alvin and the Chipmunks has also pretty much established that critics are never going to show it any love.our editor recommends'Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked' Trailer Hits Web (Video)It's a Zoo This Season: 23 Awards Contenders Featuring AnimalsThe Big Screen's Evolution of Talking Animals That being the case, if the true gauge of a worthy sequel is consistency, then it would be fair to say that Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked is every bit as frantic, frenetic, groan-inducing and all around grating as its two predecessors. PHOTOS: The Big Screen's Evolution of Talking Animals From the p.o.v. of its targeted young audiences (it's G-rated, as opposed to those prior PG ratings) it should handily do the trick at the holiday box office, although it still would have been nice if they could have made a slight effort to instill the Ross Bagdasarian Sr. characters with a modicum of charm and inventiveness. The plot, if you could call it that, has Alvin, Simon and Theodore (again provided by the sped-up voices of Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler and Jesse McCartney) wreaking havoc aboard a luxury liner, much to the eternal chagrin of their "dad" Dave (a contractually sincere but nevertheless embarrassed-looking Jason Lee). Once again Alvin's shenanigans lead to no good-in this case landing all the 'Munks and Chipettes (the returning Amy Poehler, Anna Faris and Christina Applegate, although good luck telling their characters apart) on a remote island with an active volcano and a crazed fortune hunter (former SNL cast-member Jenny Slate). They're soon joined by Dave and the ever-conniving Uncle Ian (David Cross) who spends the entire film stuck in a pelican suit. PHOTOS: It's a Zoo This Season: 23 Awards Contenders Featuring Animals While incoming director Mike Mitchell (Shrek Forever After) admittedly keeps the 'Munks moving at a chipper clip, the script by Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger -- they also penned the Squeakquel -- settles for well-worn pop culture references (James Bond, Cast Away) and wince-worthy puns, like "You can follow me on Critter." At least there's a glimmer of inspiration in some of those song choices. Aside from sampling recent hit offerings from Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and LMFAO, the film actually mines a bit of humor by having the marooned Chipettes singing defeated, a cappella snippets of Destiny's Child's "Survivor" and The Go-Go's "Vacation." Remarkably The Ballad of Gilligan's Isle didn't make the cut. Cheers & Jeers: 10 A Few Things I Hate About My Teenage Daughter

I Dispise My Teenage Daughter Jeers to I Dispise My Teenage Daughter to be so detestable. How do you hate the brand new Fox sitcom? Allow me to count the methods...Want more Cheers & Jeers? Sign up for TV Guide Magazine. It wastes Emmy-champion Jaime Pressly (I'm Earl) inside a dumb-bland role like a single mother who had been elevated by religious zealots. It wastes Tony-champion Katie Finneran (Promises, Promises) inside a degrading role like a single mother who eats cake together with her bare hands. It wastes The Wire's electrifying Chad Coleman as Finneran's African-American ex-husband - and that i describe him this way only because he's otherwise nondescript. It wastes Bridesmaids' uproarious Wendi McLendon-Covey as Finneran's high-school mean-girl-switched-principal. Around the plus side, it keeps her from playing David Spade's wife on Rules of Engagement. The titular women (Kristi Lauren and Aisha Dee) are extremely abhorrent, it isn't even funny within the pilot, they lock a paraplegic classmate within the bathroom for 2 hrs - that is how lengthy the episode felt. Pressly's character apparently includes a crush on her behalf ex-brother-in-law, an uptight lawyer performed by Desperate Housewives' Kevin Rahm. Ewww! The laugh track does not appear to obtain the show's stale gags amusing. Fox cancelled good shows like Human Target and also the Chicago Code to create room with this poultry on the fall schedule. CBS cancelled The Brand New Adventures of Old Christine, clearing up producers Sherry Bilsing and Ellen Kreamer to cocreate this greatly inferior single-mother sitcom. Salma Hayek on Antonio Banderas in 'The Skin I Live In'

Posted: Wed., Nov. 23, 2011, 12:00pm PTBy Hayek'The Skin I Live In'"Halfway through seeing the extraordinary Pedro Almodovar film, 'The Skin I Live In,' I had the sudden realization that Antonio Banderas, the man I know so well, had completely vanished from the screen. All I could see was Robert Ledgard, the insane surgeon whom revenge drives into a God-complex love affair with his own creation. After two decades of knowing Antonio, I thought he could no longer surprise me. 'The Skin I live In' proved me wrong. I was completely mesmerized by the variety of emotions that Antonio was able to evoke with such a restrained and elegant performance.Robert Ledgard, icy, magnetic, perverse and seductive at the same time, is the creation of an actor in total command of his abilities, and afraid of nothing. Under the masterful direction of Pedro Almodovar, Antonio has given us, in my opinion, the finest performance yet in his long and extraordinary career."Return to the SAG Preview Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Henry Cavill Explains How 'Immortals' Became 'Art-ified' By Tarsem Singh

The comparisons between "Immortals" and "300" are inevitable, but the stars of Tarsem Singh's big budget take on Greek mythology say that the flick is a lot more than "just a guy movie." Sure it's got lots of violence, slo-mo and special effects, but it's also got the impressive visual stamp of Singh which is something that can be appreciated by everyone. "This is Tarsem Singh we're talking about here, it's a visual spectacle, and the 3-D only adds to that," leading man Henry Cavill said. "I will say in the past I've been skeptical of [3-D, but] after seeing this, the technology has come along so far. This is incredible, and all the violence in the movie, if people don't like that, it's actually art-ified. It becomes a 'beautific' ballet of blood if you will." Plus, the ladies will love the film's "incredible love story." "You often think of these Greek epics -- it skirts over all that stuff -- but you've got an incredibly hardened man who's hardened his heart to anything at this stage, and there's a woman who manages to soften him so much so that he starts to think of things which he's never even considered in the past," Cavill added. His costars were similarly enthused about "Immortals." Cavill's onscreen love interest, Frieda Pinto, found the visual effects to be its best selling point. "I think it's a different take on the whole Greek mythology and that's going to be the biggest surprise," she said. "Visually it's not like anything, it's not like any of the big-budget action-packed films that you've seen before." And Luke Evans, who is currently filming "The Hobbit" in New Zealand with Peter Jackson, made the big statement that "Immortals" is "like nothing I've ever seen." "Like Henry said, Tarsem at the helm with his imagination and his enthusiasm and his ideas, it just married so well with what he was doing and the final production," Evans said. "The values of it are just incredible, and we've got this 3-D thing and it just comes alive, it really does." Are you excited about the visual effects in "Immortals"? But was the film’s quality worthy of opening AFI Fest this year? Movieline saw J. Edgar last night — along with a bunch of other critics, bloggers and assorted plebes — and we’re not quite sure. REVIEW: Real Steel Is Movie Comfort Food, with Robot Boxers

In Real Steel Hugh Jackman plays a boxing promoter who’s forced to reconnect with his estranged son. But the boxers on which Jackman hangs his hopes aren’t human: Real Steel, which is based on a Richard Matheson short story, is set in the near future, when “robot boxing” is all the rage. Controlled by their handlers, these overgrown Rock’ Em Sock ‘Em Robots are sent into the ring to do the work real human athletes used to do, but not even these guys are always built to take a punch. Just like their primitive plastic forebears, their blocks get knocked off routinely. Real Steel, directed by Shawn Levy (with Steven Spielberg as one of the executive producers), is a big, expensive-looking entertainment masquerading as a modest, straightforward one, and sometimes the illusion works. Jackman’s Charlie Kenton is a down-and-out former boxer looking for his next big metallic meal ticket. Instead, he gets temporary custody of the son he seems to have forgotten he had, 11-year-old Max (Dakota Goyo), whose mother has just died in an accident. Charlie wants nothing to do with Max, and basically sells him off to the rich husband of Max’s aunt (played by a frosty Hope Davis, in the dragon-mom role), who wants custody. But one of the intricacies of the deal is that Charlie must first spend the summer with Max. And although the two don’t get along too famously at first, their relationship and their fortunes turn around when they stumble upon an early — circa 2016 — robot boxer that’s been relegated to the scrap heap but that still has plenty of fight left in him. Atom, as that robot is called, has a measure of charm compared with his newer, slicker counterparts. His eyes glow blue from behind his flat, fencer’s mask face, allowing him a degree of expressiveness. He also has a special characteristic built right in: He’s a sympathetic robot, able and willing to absorb and imitate any action a human makes. The predictability of Real Steel — the fact that we know father and son will gradually be drawn closer, and that Atom will become a hero in his own idiosyncratic robot way — is less a liability than a kind of comfort food. This is one of those futuristic pictures that, the presence of robots aside, doesn’t look all that futuristic: The characters’ outfits have that retro-rugged gray-brown vibe of clothes you can find hanging on the sale rack at Diesel. (The exception are the limp, drapey T-shirts worn by Evangeline Lily as robot mechanic, and Jackman’s love interest, Bailey; she gets the Rick Owens stuff that you have to go to Barneys to get.) Shot by Mauro Fiore, the picture manages to look crisp and glossy even in its semi-drabness. And the action sequences are fairly clean and reasonably exciting — at their best, they capture the aura of watching a real-life fight, where athletic artistry coupled with the risk of real pain keep you wanting to watch, even when you have the impulse to turn away. Jackman is predictably raffish and swaggering — watching him is painless, though the role doesn’t ask a lot of him emotionally. Goyo’s Max is a scrappy little wiseacre, but you warm up to him: His role in the proceedings is to see value in a thrown-away robot — as a thrown-away kid, he can sure identify — and he slips into the role comfortably. Still, there’s something disappointingly anonymous about Real Steel. (The screenplay is by John Gatins, working from a story by Dan Gilroy and Jeremy Leven, inspired by Matheson.) It goes through all the motions, properly and efficiently, and yet it’s missing some core warmth. Watching Real Steel, I kept thinking of Brad Bird’s retro-modern cartoon The Iron Giant, and of how that picture humanized a metal alien so effortlessly. Atom is appealing enough, but the movie conditions us to care for him more than it gives us reason to. In the end, we just give in, because that’s what the movie expects of us. But even within that context, a few sequences stand out: When Max realizes Atom can imitate human movement, he urges Charlie to train with him, and the two set up an impromptu training ground in front of an old motel, right-jabbing and uppercutting in unison. The moment is captured in wide shot and carefully cut, so we can take the measure of both of these bodies, the mechanical one and its flesh-and-blood counterpart, in all their glory. Sugar Ray Leonard consulted on Real Steel, and though I’m not sure you can see evidence of that awesome street cred throughout most of the movie, it certainly shines through here. As Jackman and Atom work through their moves, simpatico, they present the brief illusion that something might actually be at stake here. And that muscle might have more in common with motherboards than we ever would have thought.

Evangeline Lilly Drops Hobbit Hints, Inspires Nerd Boners While Speaking Elvish

At last night’s premiere of Real Steel, co-star Evangeline Lilly — fresh from shooting The Hobbit in New Zealand, ZOMG — caught up with Access Hollywood for an unusually geeky Access Hollywood chat, during which she dropped a few lines in Elvish. So hot, right LOTRers? See if you can devise plot hints from the Elf-speak dialogue she trilled, after the jump. Something something “Come now!” And something something “The cells are empty!” Good luck figuring it all out, Middle Earthers. My favorite moment comes at the beginning of the chat when Lilly drops some real talk, admitting that with all of the prep crews helping her on set she has no excuse for messing up her Hobbit performance as Tauriel, a woodland elf. If only all actors were so self-aware! And then, the ultimate question: “Are you scared of the fans of this?” Because you should be! My preeeee-cious… Oh wait, my bad. The question was, “Are you scared of the fans of this… because they are such rabid fans?” Same difference, I guess. And Evangeline is rightfully scared. “My character is actually not in [J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel] The Hobbit,” she explains. “My character is an invention of Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Phillippa Boyd, so either fans are going to love her or absolutely despise and be bitter towards her because she’s not authentic.” Aaaaand then Access Hollywood’s on-air interviewer brings it back to LOST, offering the theory that fans of the television series are also huge Tolkien nerds and therefore will forgive Lilly for perverting the legacy of their literary icon. Hmm. Sure? Evangeline Lilly Dishes On Filming ‘The Hobbit’ [Access Hollywood]

Producer Bruce Nash Speaks About His Hanukkah Project (Exclusive)

APIC/Getty ImagesJudah Maccabee Sparks always fly when two or more projects telling the same story bubble up in Hollywood at the same time. Precedent shows that being second is the same as being last. But a story as cherished as that of the origin of Hanukkah comes with special sensitivities, which is why Warner Bros.' efforts to make a version with Mel Gibson have prompted nervousness and sharp criticism in certain quarters. Producer Bruce Nash, who has been working on his own version with screenwriter Scott Abbott (Introducing Dorothy Dandridge) since 2007, says his project didn't originally arise from any competitive instinct. EXCLUSIVE: Move Over, Mel Gibson: New Judah Maccabee Project in the Works "Doing this project comes from a very positive rather than a negative point of view," Nash says. "This is not just a matter of dueling Hollywood projects." Nash says he has been trying to find a way to tell the Judah Maccabee story since he entered the business in 1992, and that his personal motivation predates the news that Gibson and screenwriter Joe Eszterhas(Basic Instinct) are developing a script for Warner Bros. Just the same, Nash acknowledges that Gibson's involvement in a rival project does trigger a protective instinct, even if it isn't the underlying reason for doing his own. "I'm proud of my religion and this story is about heroism, courage and sacrifice," he says. "I thought it was an important story to share with people of all faiths. For me this project is a lifetime in the making." Mel Gibson Warner Bros.

Saul Zaentz Sues Miramax-Disney (Again!) Over Oscar-Champion The British Patient

Thatlegendary 90-year-old movie producer Saul Zaentz is litigious is certainly not new. But here’s the one thing: This isn’t the very first time Zaentz has been doing this. He prosecuted Miramax and Disney over virtually exactly the same stuff within the same court within the same picback in 2006. Also it was Lavely & Singer who filed that suit, too. (Did they simply Xerox today’s complaint?) That firstscuffle was ignored in 2008. Within this latest legal fight, Zaentzalso is seeking $20 million in damages — just like before. Obviously, the Weinsteinsowned Miramax once the film was launched, however it’s Disney’s problem because Zaentz claims a button House guaranteed to become great for the dough.Obviously,Walt disney doesn’t own Miramax any longer. The Last Gladiators

A Jigsaw production, in association with Northern Lights Hockey, Locomotion Pictures. (International sales: Submarine, NY.) Produced by Alex Gibney, Jim Podhoretz, Larry Weitzman. Executive producers, Barry Reese, Donald "Dee" Rizzo, Michael Messner, George Gund, Robert J. Brooks. Co-executive producers, Harry J. Kenney, Tom Goebel, Thomas Kopf. Directed by Alex Gibney. Written by Larry Weitzman, Jim Podhoretz, Alex Gibney. With: Chris Nilan, Tony Twist, Bob Probert, Marty McSorley, Donald Brashear, Paul Shantz, Henry Nilan, Leslie Nilan, Kim McCarthy, Craig Janney, Guy Carbonneau, Bob Gainey, Todd Ewen, Red Fisher, Serge Savard, Jimmy Vessey.Alternately brutal and graceful, as befits its subject, Alex Gibney's pro-hockey docu "The Last Gladiators" sports a slew of archival goon-fight footage and has an indelibly articulate central figure in recovering enforcer Chris "Knuckles" Nilan. Alas, the filmmaker's choice to have the former Montreal Canadiens champ share ice time with several contempo players results in a pic that tends to cut away from Nilan just when it ought to be skating in for a closer look. Nevertheless, Gibney's "Gladiators" remains entertaining and illuminating, a pic with the muscle to score smallscreen goals while shoving competing jock docs into the boards. Besides filling the need for a sharp documentary about a widely misunderstood game, the hyper-prolific Gibney has done a bang-up job of detailing the physical and psychological ravages of pro sportsmanship. Nilan, a native Bostonian who played for the Bruins late in his NHL career, opens his battered hands for Gibney's inspection, and his heart as well. Speaking candidly of his temper tantrums, his professional fall from grace, and his struggles with drug and alcohol addiction, the player who logged some 3,000 penalty-box minutes in 13 years, through dozens of surgeries, appears permanently hardened but determined to achieve redemption. On the surface, this might seem an unusual project for Gibney, whose docus -- including "Taxi to the Dark Side" and "Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room" -- have generally favored political subjects. But "The Last Gladiators" proves ideal for allowing Gibney to explore his subsidiary interest in masculinity operating at the extremes of what's socially permissible. While Nilan was worshipped by rabid fans for generously giving expression to their less savory fantasies, the enforcer's aggression eventually moved past the sanctioned field of play, taking its toll on Nilan and a number of those around him. In between vintage hockey clips and glimpses of the player trash-talking his way through a 2010 "old-timers' game," Nilan recounts his run-ins with the law and altercations with colleagues, including the arch-nemesis coach whom he half-accidentally gave eight stitches in the head. The tough guy tears up when discussing some subjects -- including his father, a former Green Beret who instilled in him an early desire to fight, and the Canadiens' 1986 Stanley Cup win, the height of his career. Myriad other talking heads, from sports commentators to Nilan's former teammates, enable Gibney to expand his film's focus beyond Nilan to the now-diminished culture of hockey enforcing -- a zoom-back strategy that works well except when the docu unduly interrupts the Nilan narrative with intermittent mini-portraits of lesser players such as Paul Shantz, Tommy Twist and Donald Brashear. The pic's flow suffers as well from an overabundance of pithy intertitles, although the editing within each segment -- including comic-relief clips from the immortal "Slap Shot" -- is both brisk and incisive. The visual texture of snippets from decades-old games is understandably splotchy, but the pic's tech package makes it into the net anyway, with classic-rock tunes and David Kahne's score adding drama to the real-life action.Camera (color, DV), Laurent Beauchemin, Geoffory Beauchemin, Mark Berger, Benjamin Bloodwell, Stephen Chung, Body Estus, Lyle Morgan, Christopher Romeike Alex Margineanu, Larry Lecain; editor, Jim Podhoretz; music, David Kahne; music supervisor, John McCullough; sound, Ryan M. Always Brando

A Shoreline Entertainment presentation of the Alya Films production in colaboration with Hamzeh Mystique Films and K. Lazaar Foundation. (Worldwide sales: Shoreline, La.) Created by Ziad H. Hamzeh, Ridha Behi. Executive producer, Abdelaziz Ben Mlouka. Directed, compiled by Ridha Behi. With: Anis Raache, Christian Erickson, Lotfi Al Abdelli, Soufiene Chaari, Souhir Amara. (French, Arabic, British dialogue)Shortly before Marlon Brando's 2004 demise, he met with Tunisian helmer Ridha Behi, allegedly indicating enthusiasm about working together on the feature together. Whatever shape that project may have taken been with them been recognized, Behi's "Always Brando" ends up a curious animal: Part fan worship, part personal memory, it mostly by using this brief real-existence interaction because the springboard for any crude, old morality tale concerning the corrupting character of showbiz. Exposure outdoors the Arab world is going to be slight, using the prominence a classic-school predatory-homosexual character prone to switch off many developers. Seen onscreen sometimes and heard talking about his brief, odd interactions with Brando (although not in nearly enough detail), Behi states they'd planned creating a film about "two Brandos": someone to be performed through the star themself, another by Anis Raache being an actor trying to emulate his idol's occupation within the modern Arab world. Current pic's drastically reworked script keeps the second element: Raache (whose allegedly amazing resemblance to Brando is simply fair) plays Anis, a respectable small-town guy whose mind is switched when Western filmmakers, shooting a cheesy commercial film about mythic Atlantis, improbably choose to hire him as lead. In the beginning, Anis is not whatsoever sure he really wants to be an actress, and he's delay through the crew's exploitation of cheap local labor girlfriend Zina (Souhir Amara) thinks the entire factor is an awful idea. But Anis is lured through the bogus promises of Hollywood fame dangled by imported actor James (Christian Erickson), and shortly he's caving towards the lecherous old actor's casting-couch entreaties, then losing themself in newly found vices of luxury, sloth and drug abuse. This road-to-ruin tale could happen to be composed eighty years ago, whether it were a Hollywood film obviously, attitudes toward licentious behavior and Western influence remain greatly unchanged in a lot of present day Muslim world, including Arabic cinema. Veteran helmer Behi ("The Swallows Don't Die," "The Miracle Box") does not even make an effort to reconcile his high-minded message using the bothersome proven fact that Brando themself wasn't any paragon of virtue, virtually disregarding that ethical quandary. The film has time for digressions into broad comedy and clips from stereotypical Arab representations in film (particularly a well known "Raiders from the Lost Ark" scene), but simply what all of this really has related to Brando develops ever fuzzier, and also the cautionary narrative is really as inert because it is clumsily melodramatic. Perfs are highly variable, out of the box the modest set up.Camera (color, HD), Martial Barrault editor, Kehena Attia music, Lutfi Bochnak, Nicola Piovani, Jean Claude Petit production designer, Toufik Behi seem (Dolby 5.1), Hashmi Joulak re-recording mixer, Samy Gharbi assistant director, Josette Barnetche.
